why does size matter?

I mean really. Since when does the number of Facebook fans we have on our business pages validate our talent? I get countless emails asking me “how did you get so many fans?!”. I see photographers every.single.day posting how sad they are that they just lost ONE fan. It makes me so sad! How much of your time is spent looking at that ridiculous number?? Probably much more than you’re willing to admit 🙂 If you own a boutique or sell items I can absolutely see why that number matters; those are potential customers! But for photographers why do you desperately want so many fans? When did that become so important? Personally, I have over 10,000 fans. Not going to lie, it makes me feel like the cool kid I always wanted to be when growing up! But what advantages does my business get having 10,400+ fans? In reality…not much. Of all those amazing people that choose to follow my page hardly 1,500 are local.

Do I feel SO humbled that people in Australia, Germany, Italy, Canada, the UK, etc follow my page? You bet I do!!!! But at the end of the day I focus on my clients. I focus on my potential clients and as awesome as my over-seas fans are I doubt they will be booking a family shoot with me anytime soon 😉 So if you are a photographer please stop looking at that silly number and letting it get you down. It has nothing to do with how amazing you are. It has little to do with how many sessions you book. It has NOTHING to do with how happy your clients are. All of that is what matters the most and all of that can only come from YOU. So stop doubting yourself. Stop thinking that number has anything to do with your talent because it doesn’t. Focus on your business and your clients. Because really, what else matters?
